Edwards - Recent works in Oil
Cut
Kulture and Vain are pleased to present the work of Jesse Edwards, a forward thinking Seattle artist who embraces the
techniques of Impressionists and Old Masters alike while challenging the viewer
with a reality based subject matter that questions morality and middle class
value systems. The work displayed confront the age old question of beauty by
juxtaposing images of hardcore street life and classic still life composition.
Jesse Edwards' paintings ultimately are about love, life, and redemption.
Jesse EdwardsÕ
education in art began in the early nineties on the streets of Seattle as he
followed his older brothers lead and began an illustrious
career of writing graffiti. Jesse acknowledges the impact of seeing the
masterpiece murals of local graffiti legends SOUL1, SNEKE, REY, BNK and others who blessed the old Vogue walls in
downtown Seattle had on his desire to create art. As he developed his own style
Jesse began researching art history at the Seattle public library which led him
to the works of the Old Masters and Impressionists. Jesses synthesis of such
disparate influences gives his art a tension which always creates a reaction in
the viewer without being simply reactionary.
ÒJesse Edwards-Recent Works in OilÓ is the third in a series of art shows which will be
curated by Cut KultureÕs visual arts director Damion Hayes at the VAIN Salon
gallery.
The series aims to create a dialogue between SeattleÕs arts
patrons and the burgeoning
contemporary urban arts scene we have here.
- Cut Kulture
United is a small art and
design collective that has been dedicated to promoting art with a global urban
aesthetic since 1998. Endeavoring to bring together sometimes divergent
elements of culture, Cut Kulture splices together hip-hop, pop, skateboard, and
design aesthetics into a veritable melting pot ofÉ well, cut culture. To
further this goal, Cut Kulture seeks to represent something of the global cut
and paste that is taking place in the modern marketplace: music producers
sample music, artists reference past art, and multimedia conjoins the real and
the hyper-real. Toward this end, Cut Kulture has worked in two arenas: as a
t-shirt design company, as well as in the more curatorial sense of organizing
and creating art shows. This arts-centric organization seeks to be centered in
arts brokerage, yet not for brokerage in the traditional sense of the term
(read: for the love of money), but for the love and dissemination of art.
